How to Make a Passport Photo at Home
Last reviewed: September 12, 2026
Passport and ID photos from your phone, in three steps: capture with the front camera, remove the background, and export at a supported photo preset or as a print sheet. Face guidance and background removal run on the device with models bundled in the app. This guide walks through the passport photo maker in Offline Scan & Photo Toolkit.
Preset vs. government requirements
The presets below are supported photo presets in the app — convenience sizes, not official requirements. Choosing a preset does not mean a photo satisfies every requirement of the issuing authority. Requirements can change, so always verify current requirements with the relevant authority.
The three steps at a glance
1. Capture — pick a preset, then align your face with the on-screen guide.
2. Edit — remove the background for plain white, then adjust brightness and contrast.
3. Export — save the photo at the preset size or as a print sheet.
Step 1 — Choose a preset and capture the photo
Pick one of the 9 supported photo presets — US Passport, US Visa, Canada Passport, UK Passport, Schengen Visa, EU/ICAO, China Visa, India Passport, and Australia Passport — or define a custom size. Then switch to the front camera and follow the on-screen face guide, which helps you center and position your face in the frame. Stand facing an even light source and keep the camera at eye level.
Step 2 — Remove the background and fine-tune
Toggle background removal and the app replaces the backdrop with plain white — the cut-out runs on the device with ML Kit selfie segmentation, a model bundled with the app, so your photo isn't uploaded for cloud processing. Then adjust brightness and contrast until the photo looks clean and even.
Step 3 — Export the photo or a print sheet
Export the finished photo at the preset size, or lay out copies on a print sheet: print-sheet export tiles multiple copies onto a single 4×6 in (4R) sheet, saved as a JPG you can print at home or at a print shop.
Which preset do I need?
Nine presets ship in the app, plus a custom size you define. A preset sets the photo's size — it does not confirm that a photo meets every requirement of the issuing authority. Each row below links the official government source for that preset's photo requirements, with the date the requirements were last checked.

Before you submit — verify with the issuing authority
Photo requirements differ by country and can change over time. Before you print or submit a photo, open the official source for your preset above and check the current requirements — the preset size is a convenience, not confirmation. When in doubt, the issuing authority's guidance is the one that counts.
Your photo is processed on your device
Face guidance and background removal run on the device with models bundled in the app, so your photo isn't uploaded for cloud processing. It stays in the app's local storage until you choose to export or share it. Read how the app handles your photos.
